A Fresh Start for Every Table
Updated: Sep 5

There is something about the beginning of a new year that makes us pause.
We look back at where we have been. We think about what we want to change. We make plans, set goals, and hope for better days ahead.
A new year is a chance to begin again.
And sometimes, beginning again starts with something very simple: bread on the table.
Bread is one of the most basic foods we have. It is familiar, comforting, and something that belongs in almost every home. But for families struggling to make ends meet, even something as basic as a loaf of bread can become a burden.
As we enter a new year, we want to think not only about our own fresh starts, but about the families who are still carrying the weight of the past year with them.
For a parent who is struggling to put food on the table, a loaf of bread can mean more than food. It can mean one less worry. One less expense. A little more room in the budget for milk, medicine, school supplies, or whatever else the family needs.
As one volunteer shared, there are families that need help and are really struggling but they are too embarrassed to ask. From the bread distribution he can see who is not making ends meet. Based on that he can discreetly give additional assistance. Because bread is such a staple and the kids need it so urgently, people who would always turn down help don’t have the heart to pass on it. It’s also much less awkward to come to take bread than it is to personally request help when the family needs it.
This year, as we make our own resolutions and think about the kind of year we hope to have, perhaps we can make room for one more resolution:
To help make sure that no child begins the new year with an empty table.
A new year.
A fresh beginning.
A simple loaf of bread.
One loaf at a time, we can help bring nourishment, dignity, and hope into the homes that need it most.
May this be a year of renewal—for all of us, and for every family we have the privilege of reaching.
